Lead Engineer – Powertrain Controls Embedded Software








About the Role:


The role involves developing the capabilities of the Lotus powertrain controls department, to deliver Lotus and client objectives. The ideal candidate will be required to represent Lotus, both externally and internally, as well as providing technical input and direction to the department.


There will be exposure to a wide range of powertrain controls activities, from strategy development and coding, through to calibration activities and climatic testing, for application in engine and automatic or dual clutch transmission control.


The role is office based, within an open plan, team environment. Vehicle testing and evaluation will be required on the road and track, as well as the use of test facilities (emissions lab, test beds, workshops etc).




Key Responsibilities Include:



  • Develop and implement engineering processes, to support the project and departmental objectives.
  • Responsibility for concurrent programs for Lotus Engineering and cars programmes.
  • Carry out vehicle and engine controls system development to Lotus or customer development processes.
  • Prepare for and attend offsite testing and climatic test trips.
  • Create control algorithm specifications.
  • Create or modify calibration procedures for new or developing control algorithms.
  • Design engine control systems to satisfy the emissions and performance objectives.
  • Investigate and resolve issues relating to engine and/or transmission control.
  • Support the manufacturing and after-sales departments with issues relating to powertrain controls and integration.
  • Lead technical aspects of smaller projects.
  • Issue reports on development work undertaken and provide input to status reports.
  • Perform and co-ordinate technical aspects of Powertrain projects.
  • Preparation of Powertrain technical documentation, including reports and presentation material.
  • Provide guidance on implementation and calibration of control algorithms.
  • Provide technical input to proposals for new projects.
  • Schedule, supervise and correlate results from emission test work.
  • Specify ECU I/O for new systems.
  • Support the Chief Engineer or Executive Engineer at supplier or customer visits.
  • Train / assist with the career development of department engineers and junior engineers.
  • Understand then calibrate engine control algorithms, using appropriate calibration tools.
  • Develop solutions relating to the integration of powertrain control systems within the whole vehicle electrical architecture.
  • Health & safety implementation.







Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:





  • Experience with writing C-code software, ideally for engine management systems and possibly transmission control systems.
  • Able to implement the software for new functions, test it and calibrate.
  • Engineering degree / HNC or equivalent experience.
  • A thorough understanding of automotive legislative requirements.
  • A thorough understanding of powertrain controls strategies and software development.
  • High level of PC skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
  • Familiarity with calibration development tools and techniques.
  • Automotive powertrain experience, with recent experience of delivering hand C-code and aspects of calibration.
  • High level of communication skills.
  • Outgoing/confident nature and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Self-reliant and self-starting – takes Responsibility for overall delivery and ownership of projects and tasks to completion.
  • Should possess a very high degree of self- motivation.
  • Will exhibit a high level of attention to detail.
  • High level leadership qualities.
  • Planning skills and coordination of project activities will be expected to be developed.
  • UK driving licence as some travel may be required.








  • Engineering degree / Masters / PhD.
  • Membership of an appropriate institution (IMechE).
  • Knowledge of advanced powertrain developments, with an emphasis on CO2 reduction.
  • Advanced combustion analysis and calibration tools experience, such as DoE and calibration management tools.
  • Calibration background & a thorough understanding of the calibration process.
  • Recent delivery of programs at a senior level, within a calibration department.
  • Thorough understanding of combustion engine development.
  • Flexible, motivated and delivery driven.
  • Being fluent in a second language would be advantageous.
