About the Role:



To ideal candidate will be required to develop the capabilities of the Lotus powertrain controls department, to deliver Lotus and client objectives, as well as, providing technical input and direction to the department.


The role involves gaining exposure to a wide range of powertrain controls activities, from strategy development and coding, through to calibration activities and climatic testing, for applications in engine and automatic or dual clutch transmission controls. There is a potential to move onto BEV projects that will require Simulink skills for auto code generation.


A full UK driving licence is essential for this role as there will be supplier visits within the UK and Europe. Planning skills and the coordination of project activities will be expected to be developed.


The role is office based, within an open plan team environment. There will be some use of the test facilities (emissions lab, test beds, workshops etc).




Key Responsibilities Include:



  • Develop and implementation of engineering processes, to support project and departmental objectives.
  • Responsibility for concurrent programs for Lotus Engineering and cars programmes.
  • Writing C-code software, ideally for engine management systems and possibly transmission control systems.
  • Implementing the software for new functions, test and calibrate.
  • Carry out vehicle and engine controls system development to Lotus or customer development processes.
  • Prepare for and attend offsite testing and climatic test trips.
  • Create control algorithm specifications.
  • Create or modify calibration procedures for new or developing control algorithms.
  • Design engine control systems to satisfy the emissions and performance objectives.
  • Investigate and resolve issues relating to engine and/or transmission controls.
  • Support the manufacturing and after-sales departments with issues relating to powertrain controls and integration.
  • Issue reports on development work undertaken and provide input to status reports.
  • Preparation of Powertrain technical documentation, including reports and presentation material.
  • Provide guidance on implementation and calibration of control algorithms.
  • Provide technical input to proposals for new projects.
  • Schedule, supervise, make changes, and correlate results from the emission test work.
  • Specify ECU I/O for new systems.
  • Support the Chief Engineer or Executive Engineer at supplier or customer visits.
  • Train / assist with the career development of department engineers and junior engineers.
  • Understand then calibrate engine control algorithms, using the appropriate calibration tools.
  • Develop solutions relating to the integration of powertrain control systems within the whole vehicle electrical architecture.
  • Health & safety implementation.




Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:





  • Experience of using calibration tools, such as, Inca or CANape and networking tools like CANoe.
  • Experience of version control tools, such as, Microsoft Azure DevOps.
  • Engineering degree / HNC or equivalent experience.
  • A thorough understanding of automotive legislative requirements.
  • A thorough understanding of powertrain controls strategy and software development.
  • Able to understand and write C-code.
  • High level PC skills expected (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
  • Familiarity with calibration development tools and techniques.
  • Automotive powertrain experience, with recent experience of delivering hand C-code and aspects of calibration.
  • Outgoing/confident nature and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Self-reliant and self-starting – takes responsibility for overall delivery and ownership of projects and tasks to completion.
  • Should possess a very high degree of self- motivation.
  • Exhibits a high level of attention to detail.
  • High level leadership qualities.






  • Engineering degree / Masters / PhD.
  • Membership for an appropriate institution (IMechE).
  • Knowledge of advanced powertrain developments, with an emphasis on CO2 reduction.
  • Experience with advanced combustion analysis and calibration tools, such as, DoE and calibration management tools.
  • Calibration background, thorough understanding of the calibration process.
  • Recent delivery of programs, at a senior level, within a calibration department.
  • Thorough understanding of the combustion engine development.
  • Flexible, motivated and delivery driven.
  • Language skills
