Design for Service & Safety by Design EV Propulsion Engineer - 6 Month Contract Role - Inside IR35 - Location: Remote with some travel between Wellesbourne & Hethel as required


Responsible for support and delivery of Design for Service and Safety by Design commodity on EV propulsion system. The role demands a high level of diligence driven around EV propulsion system Design Serviceability and Safety. You will be comfortable with developing relationships to work closely across the propulsion business functions and cascade and deliver Design for Service and Safety by Design requirements.


Purpose of role: 

Deliver all necessary system analysis, required implementation and development to achieve Design for Service and Safety by Design principles across the propulsion system, focusing on 4 main areas:

  1. EV propulsion system Design for Service
  2. EV propulsion system definition of Safety by Design
  3. Propulsion System Design for Service and Safety by Design Rules and Guidelines 
  4. Serviceability and safety requirements

Day to day responsibilities: 

  • Contribute to the design and evolution of specific systems with regards to safety standards and serviceability requirements
  • Effectively demonstrate rationale within documentation process
  • Provide to engineering design and delivery team a clear definition on Service requirements and Safety
  • Rapid and preventive reaction to issues that may arise during product development assessing and developing inventive ways to steer issues toward resolution
  • Consider and drive improvement through Design, Service, Safety, Diagnostic and Technical publications
  • Develop propulsion system technical documentation to support the electric vehicle system during his life cycle in service
  • Develop symptom based guided diagnostics to support propulsion system
  • Allowing the lessons learned to be captured and subsequently embedded into improved standards and requirements to ensure that continuous improvement is consciously supported – Prevent recurrence
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team


Required Experience: 

  • Automotive industry experience with Electrical and Electric vehicle systems
  • Previous experience creating and delivering concise technical reports
  • Previous experience within Vehicle Engineering, Powertrain, Electrical or Service
  • Complex understanding of Service environment requirements
  • Automotive diagnosis and repair knowledge (workshop processes and test tools)
  • Specific Design and Development of Vehicle Electrification Propulsion Systems
  • Experience with Standards or Requirement definition
  • Automotive diagnostics data knowledge (ECU diagnostics data)
  • Experience with Warranty mitigation and a good understanding of automotive Warranty systems
  • System and Technical issue management experience
  • The ability to identify and drive product development in the best interest of the business and customer


Desirable experience: 

  • Technical knowledge of BEV, PHEV and vehicle systems, including Powertrain and Electrical sub-systems and components
  • Experience of complex high voltage systems and safe operating conditions
  • A working knowledge HSE regulation and ISO 26262
  • Technical knowledge on Diagnostic System Strategy
  • Able to translate high level requirements into System Requirements
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures and protocols including CAN bus, Flexray, automotive diagnostics.
  • High Voltage Safety trained – Automotive
  • Able to use automotive diagnostics and related system development tools (UDS protocol, CANalyzer, CANape, diagnostic tools)
  • Experience of technical analysis and complex problem resolution (analytical and pragmatic approach)
